We Nudge The Squatters To Answer Our Ten Thirsty Questions
Over the last 6 years, the dance music industry witnessed the incredible rise of The Squatters. Mostly known for their big room electro house and jump up party sounds, they have gained access to and have been supported by some of the industry’s finest DJs, such as Fatboy Slim, Calvin Harris, Steve Aoki, Kissy Sell Out, Judge Jules, Doorly, Utah Saints and a whole lot more. As producers, The Squatters have receivedendless radio support from the likes of BBC Radio 1, Capital FM and Kiss100 and as DJs, have travelled the world from corner to corner, tearing up dance floors and festivals with their crazed antics and unusual DJ sets wherever they go. Their globetrotting antics have led them to Beatherder Festival (UK), Judgement Sundays (Ibiza), World DJ Festival (South Korea) and Avalon Hollywood (USA) to name but a few.
2013 saw the release of their track “Back To The Stars”, written with vocal legend Steve Edwards who has worked with Cassius, Bob Sinclar and a whole amuse-bouche of dance acts. Featuring on the hit compilations Cream Club Anthems 2013, Ministry Of Sound Dubstep Darker 3 and Pacha Future Dance 2013, the track was critically acclaimed whilst their debut album “The Squatters Asia Edition” was supported heavily in South Korea and gained major success. Along with all the record releases, The Squatters have been sharing production tips and tricks with Sonic Academy and have released a Sample pack with production heroes Loopmasters which allows new producers to get their hands on that signature Squatters sound.
For 2014, The Squatters have gone back to the drawing board to continue the ever evolving sound and this year sees a combination of slowed down weighted bass and house beats combining to create an exciting new direction for the duo that is aimed squarely at today’s infamous clubbers, music lovers and 24 hour party people.
Hello Alex and Oliver, it’s such a huge honor to be doing this interview with you, thank you much for taking time out to do it with us.
How are you doing and
what’s the craziest thing you have ever done?
Hi lasses! The
craziest thing we ever did was fly two days to Taiwan and got asked to play
hip-hop, when we don't play hip-hop. So we ate food and played with
transformer pot noodles. (noodle man) came home.
1.
To start off
tell us a bit more about each of you. If you were trying to get that girl how
would you sell yourself?
Alex: My name is
Alex which is short for Alexander the great, qualified chef and my mother is
irreplaceable so I wouldn't have to sell myself to another girl.
Oli: My name is
Oliver, I'm a qualified hairdresser with no hair and if I was to sell myself to
a girl I would accept Euros!
2.
We are from
South Africa, and we ask all our “guests” this. What’s the first thing that
comes to mind when you hear South Africa?
Mandela,
cricket, Johannesburg, Fidget House, penguins…
3.
How did the two of you meet and how did you
decide on the name THE SQUATTERS?
We met through a friend (not on a
dating site) and the name came from when we stayed on peoples floors between
gigs and over stayed our welcome.
4.
If you were a
real squatter, homeless and all what would a day in your life consist of?
Fortunately we are not homeless, and our hearts go out to the
people who are… we always try to help and give what we can to the cause.
5.
The music
industry is shit to be in. What are you trying to achieve in the industry?
We aim to just share what we love
doing as producers and people, if others think it’s shit it’s shit but if
people love it that’s always a good feeling!
6.
Let’s talk
Thirsty Nudge, if people didn’t know it was your new EP they’d probably think
it’s a porno. What inspired the EP ha ha ?
Basically we made Nudge as a track
just to nudge people to the dance floor and the name was born! Thirsty was
actually called “Be with me” then we decided on a better name and we came up
with Thirsty / Nudge. As for the porno angle we did think like that but we know
how many hits the share buttons on porno sites get!
7.
What do you
want the squatters to be remembered for?
Drinking other artist’s riders before
they arrive and bathing together.
8.
If you could
be a cartoon character for the rest of your life who would you be and why?
Alex: I would
be Happy from the Seven Dwarfs as everyone loves to feel happy!
Oli: I would
be Micky Mouse then I could sue people
9.
If you could
have one special talent what would that be?
Oli: Grow
hair like cousin IT
10.
If you could
pick one place to live in for the rest of your life where would you choose?
Alex:
Probably in Universal Studio’s Star Wars prop cupboard
Oli: I would
live wherever they have the best bananas
