Hello
Adie , Thank you for taking time out to do this interview with us. Its a bit of a big deal.. :P
Awh I feel honoured ;)
1. What’s the best thing
about living in South Africa?
To narrow it down to just one thing is quite difficult, the people,
the scenery, the food, the women… I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in the
world!
2. The name Adie is fast
becoming a native in South African house scene. How did you get into music and what
makes you stand out?
I’ve
always had a keen interest in music. I taught myself the basics of music as a
kid as well as one or 2 instruments, but it was actually by accident that I got
into the DJ scene. A friend of mine had some DJ software on his laptop and I
was playing around with it combining my favourite songs and I just fell inlove.
What
makes Adie different and stand out is I’d have to say my ability to understand
the music. When I play I immerse myself in the music and often I’m criticized
for the lack of interaction I have with the crowd but I’m constantly focused
and trying to put my all into at any given moment.
3. Not so long ago released
your new Compilation Addicted 2 what inspired the album and how has it been
received by all your fans?
Well Addicted is a brand I started last year doing events and
monthly podcasts to showcase my taste in music. Over the last year my style
both with producing and DJing has shifted quite drastically. Both my previous
albums have been a product of my music taste and people have bought into it so
I’m happy.
4. Mixing a compilation album
is no easy task. We are bombarded with fantastic music daily so how did you go
about selecting the track list?
I
wish it was as easy as putting your favourite songs on a compilation but
unfortunately the music industry doesn’t work like that. As it was with the
first Addicted, the content is chosen from the catalogue of content owned by
the record label. I just sift through it and find the tracks that represent my
taste and then I put them in a sequence that I feel people will enjoy.
5. Would I lie to you is your
next release, what was the inspiration behind the track and why did you decide
to re-work a classic which is older than you are?
The
idea was actually inspired by my label manager, Nic. We all know the original
and he approached me one day saying he had this idea could I do it. Deep House
covers are becoming quite popular in today’s scene so I jumped on the
opportunity and put something together.
6. Apple Gule features on the
vocals, how did you decide to use male vocals for the track as opposed to
female vocals?
It was also Nic’s idea to feature Apple on the single as we had this
amazingly talented vocalist in our repertoire and no place to use him. I
pitched the idea to him and he was keen so we went into studio and that’s about
it.
7. Who are some producer/musicians
you look up to and why
Surprisingly
there aren’t many musician/producers I look up to or draw inspiration from.
When I’m working on something I will relate it with someone who’s style is
similar. So if it’s very drummy I will draw inspiration from the likes of Wild
Culture or Mario Basanov, if it’s very synthy and melodic I will look at David
August and Finnebassen.
8. We believe every artist
has a message they are trying to portray to the world through their work. What
message are you trying to send out through your music?
I suppose what I try to achieve with my music is to break
boundaries with people’s opinions on the music they love / hate. I try
incorporate different styles and attract a wider audience rather that trying to
conform to one specific ideal. The more you can educate and open people’s
minds, the easier it is to talk to them with your music.
9.
As a DJ do
you think its best to play for the crowd or to be yourself and play for you/what
you want to play? What advice would you
give to up and coming DJs
I think it’s a huge
misconception for a DJ to believe that his musical taste is superior to that of
his audience and try to force his taste onto them. We should all strive to
connect with people instead of trying to go against them and do your own thing.
That being said you should always stay true to yourself and people should be
able to see that first hand in your performances.\
10. If you were a song, what song would you be and why?
I’d have to say The Who –
Behind Blue eyes. I’ll let you interpret that yourself ;)
11. What are some of your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your
neighborhood or town?
My fondest musical memories would have to be
from when I was a kid. Before we all had cellphones and ipads. When I would
listen to my favourite CDs in my Walkman to the point that they wouldn’t play
anymore. The days where you actually concentrated on the music.
12. A Deeper Addiction is the name of
your weekly podcast, can you name 3 of your deeper addictions for us?
My favourite episodes of
the podcast have surprisingly been the ones that have become most popular.
There are some that when I’ve put them together I’ve been like “damn this is
nice”
13. If you could invent a new instrument, what would it sound like?
Probably
an keyboard that could read my mind when I have a melody in my head that I can
never get right haha.
14. Any last messages for fan?
Well it’d have to be to keep supporting my
music and make sure you support local talent J
Thank you
Adie for doing this interview with us J
