Mkaio Gives Us The Lowdown On The Devil Lived
Mkaio -The Devil Lived
With The Devil Lived, I wanted to create an electronic, modern interpretation of the Garden of Eden fable. As an agnostic, I have always found the idea of two people, destined to be together, in their own world, facing existential choices, to be a fascinatingly insular yet wholly universal concept. Once in a deep relationship, who cannot relate to feeling like it's just the two of you against the world? And who cannot relate to facing the moral dilemmas of commitment, conjunction and duality of deistic expectations? Everyone has a dilemma when facing the dichotomy of a society in which you are broken and taught to be whole, and when in a relationship where you are one, yet two wholly different individuals. So those ideas became the lyrical content of the songs, "With Me" and "Showing Us All."
And with the title and track names telling the story, I am also intrigued by the idea of the Garden of Eden - in that even in Paradise, there was the snake. Even in the lightest times, the darkness is there as well. Realizing that the duality is universal is refreshing and freeing, I think. I tried to incorporate the dual tones, dual composition structure in the instrumental tracks especially. "In the Garden" is a composition split in two, chronicling the creation of the new sonic world, while the closing track "The Way Down" is the expulsion, braving a new world in to the night. And realizing the unknown night is dark, calm, strange and beautiful.
I can wax a little poetic when trying to explain the thoughts and feelings I tried to convey with my records, but that is a brief summary of my process behind the record. On the technical side, I recorded the entire record on my PC in my spare bedroom. I record and mix on Sony Acid Pro, Ableton Live, Izotope Nectar & Ozone, using a Launchkey 49, Launchpad and loops, samples and kits from Loopmasters and Soundstosample.
