Interview || Flying Blue With Ferry Tayle
Chatting To The Musical Wizard Ferry Tayle
Through his music and DJ performances, he has left an indelible mark on the world’s most enlightened, uplifted and energetically minded club & festival floors. Having rocked the legendary Trance Energy in 2010 he was christened ‘the French Wizard’ by ID&T bosses and it’s a label that’s endured. Now Ferry Tayle returns to again do justice to the tag with the follow up to his ‘Carnet De Vol’ debut.
Through the sonic-stage of ‘The Wizard’, Ludovic Meyer brings another astounding collection of tracks to the fore. Featuring frisson-thrill collaborations with studio likeminds Daniel Kandi, Driftmoon, Suncatcher and Karybde & Scylla, it also includes vocal performances from accomplished songstresses like Hannah Ray, Poppy, Sarah Shields, Erica Curran and others. Together, Always Alive, Enhanced Music and
Ferry Tayle are delighted to bring you the album that is primed & match-set to soundtrack your summer end to end…
We had a chat with Ferry Tayle about The Wizard
Hello Ferry, it’s such a huge honor to be doing this
interview with you, thank you much for taking time out to do it with us.
How are you doing?
I’m doing fine thanks a lot. What about
you ?
1. We
sat here trying to do magic, it’s not working and we want to know, If you were
a world famous magician who would you be and why?
I’m trying sometimes too and it’s not
working for me either…I should train more. If I could be a magician, I would
definitely be Chris Angel. I never missed one of his TV shows and next time I
go to Vegas, I will definitely go to see him. I’m such a big fan!
2.
We are from South Africa, and we ask all our
“guests” this. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear South
Africa?
I would say safari, lions, elephants and these kinds of animals you can see in South Africa, but I would say more Cape Town as my first trance project was called Capetown and I already visited South Africa, so I know a little bit your country :)
3.
For all our readers out there who don’t know who
Ferry Tayle is please can you tell us a little more about yourself?
I’m a French producer, musician & DJ. I started to be a jazz man before falling into Trance. I released 2 albums already (Carnet de Vol under Ferry Tayle & Aviator under Capetown) and I’ve seen success with the likes of Vol De Nuit, L’Acrobat, Trapeze, Flying Blue and collaborations with Darren Porter and Aly & Fila. I started to produce 8 years ago now.
4.
Where does your love for music and magic stem
from?
Everything happened when I was kid. I was always fascinated by magic and my first show was one from Arthur ( one of the most famous French magicians) and later David Copperfield. Besides this, I was always interested in music since I was young and I fell in love with an instrument : the saxophone. For 10 years I fell into the Jazz sound before discovering Jean Michel Jarre & his electronic sound, with his magical show !
5.
You have just released the follow up album to ‘Carnet
de Vol” titled “ The Wizard”, what inspired the Magic theme for your album?
I used The Wizard atmosphere to create an album which could describe a full magic show. I made it so that you can easily imagine watching a magic show.
6.
A lot of the tracks on The Wizard are named
after actual magic tricks, how difficult was it to get the right magic trick
name to fit the track? Or were the magic tricks actual inspirations for the
tracks?
I watched various magic tricks and I imagined how I could score them. So sometimes, I had my iPad close to me with a magic trick on it and I scored it like I had to score a movie. I try to express with sound, every single emotion from the show and I think the result is here. Don’t you think?
7.
We noticed that you gave Trapeze a magical
makeover for the album, the original is probably in our top 10 best trance
tracks ever, what were you aiming to achieve with The Wizard Album Mix of the
Trapeze?
Thanks a lot. Actually it’s really hard for me to rework or remix one of my own work because I’m a real perfectionist & never satisfied with what I’m doing. I have around 20 different versions of each track on the album & Trapeze is no different. But actually I made this version as a gift for one of my best friends. He listened to all the ideas I wanted to put into the track and always told me that I have to send it when it’s finished. After millions of reworks, I didn’t tell him anything when I finished it, then I sent it to him & this is how I knew the track was finished. He was very happy!
8.
On the album you worked with many upcoming
singers and producers, what was your favorite part of working with each one of
them?
It’s always a pleasure to collaborate with friends because they all have their own style, their own way of producing & it’s very interesting because you learn a lot. Besides this, working with some awesome singers, live in the studio, jamming together, it’s really really powerful & fun. The Wizard was a good adventure for that.
9.
How many magic tracks of The Wizard can you
perform?
Couple of close up ones, but I need to practice & learn more to try one day a big illusion. haha
10. What
are some of the major changes in your production style compared to Carnet de
Vol and The Wizard? Has your sound changed?
I learnt a lot between my first album & this one especially thanks to Laurent “Airwave” Veronnez who is my mentor and people like Daniel Kandi and more recently Darren Porter. Collaborating is always interesting because you learn a lot. I spent more time on each track, working on finer details. I become more & more of a perfectionist every year. The sound quality is much better. Musis has no limit and that’s what that fascinated me. I realized that most of time, I’m my own limit.
11. We
know you love the mystic nature of things. What mystical creature would you use
to describe the Ferry Tayle sound and why?
I think it would be a griffin because it’s a very majestic creature & it represents what trance is : a very majestic music. And it’s a very fascinating creature as well.
12. The
music industry is filled with haters and negativity how do you deal with all
the hate and negative comments about trance “dying” out?
Well, Trance has been “dying out” for 10 years after people said it was “dying out” and yet it’s still here. Compared to other genres, trance was never hyped and it’s still alive, more than ever. If people hate me, it’s a good thing, it means my music questions themselves. But honestly, I don’t pay attention to the haters, or else I would have stopped already. The day I please everybody, I’ll be worried, or you can call me Jesus Christ, lol.
13. DJing
has allowed you to travel to many places, what is the one place that you've
visited that stands out for you as best or worst?
My first UK gig was probably my worst one because it was cancelled the day I arrived, the hotel was not paid for and the promoter disappeared. It was a nightmare because I was a rookie at the time. The best one will always be A State Of Trance. When you’re requested by 5 time World N°1 DJ to play at the biggest trance show ever, it must be your best gig ever!
14. If
you had to invite three people to dinner who would they be and what would be on
the menu?
It would my closest friends & I would cook for them some typical local dish and have fun. I would start with a delicious dish with some Foie Gras & gingerbread with some onion marmalade. Then it would be some sliced chicken, cooked with fresh mushrooms & cream, topped with some Grand Marnier, and spaztle (local pasta) and for the dessert a chocolate fondant.
15. Which movie inspires your music the most Twilight
or Harry Potter ? ha ha
mmmm…what can I say…none of them ? :D
16. We guess all that ‘s left to ask is, Do you
believe in Magic?
Of course I do ! I know that behind the big illusions, there are always some tricks…but the feeling that you bring to the people with your music… that’s what I called magic.
