SAMA 20: The A to Z of SA music’s biggest event
As the clock ticks down to the 20th South African Music Awards at the Sun City Superbowl on Monday, 28 April 2014, speculation is mounting: who will scoop the most awards? Which song will be named Kia Record of the Year?
There are a number of hot contenders and potential dark horses among this year’s nominees – and, of course, the public can still cast their votes via SMS this weekend to make their favourite song one of the five finalists in the Kia Record of the Year category.
Ahead of the two ceremonies on Monday – the Industry Awards in the afternoon and the Main Awards in the evening – here’s some fun trivia to get the tongues wagging and the debates raging.
A is for… Amstel VIP Afterparty – The exclusive post-awards afterparty where guests get to rub shoulders with all the winners and the who’s who of the music biz. Party animals can buy tickets at Computicket at R480 each

D is for… Darren, Kurt Darren – With a massive seven SAMAs and counting, will he head home from Sun City with an eighth award for his mantelpiece – for Beste Pop Album (Afrikaans)?
E is for… Elvis Blue – Our homegrown Elvis bagged the 2013 SAMA for Best Adult Contemporary Album. This year his third album, Afrikaans, is in the running for Beste Kontemporêre Musiek Album with Ampie, Andrïette, Bok van Blerk and Jak de Priester – can the former Idols winner make it two in a row?
F is for… Freedom Day – SAMA 20 shares an anniversary with South Africa’s democracy, which celebrates 20 years on Freedom Day. The SAMAs are taking place on 28 April, the public holiday following this landmark day
G is for… Goodie bag – Everyone wants one of these! This year, each goodie bag is worth R20 000 and contains exclusive items from Ray Ban, Ice-Wathc, Arrow, The Body Shop and Le Coq Sportif, among others… collectively worth R3-million

J is for… Johnstone Mnyandu, aka Phuzekhemisi – regarded as South Africa’s king of maskandi music. He’ll be receiving a SAMA Lifetime Achievement Award on the night, along with Grammy-winning isicathamiya legends Ladysmith Black Mambazo, for their contribution to the South African music industry over the years
K is for… Khuli Chana – who scooped three SAMAs last year. With four nominations, including one for Kia Record of the Year, will the popular rapper repeat the feat this year?
L is for… Live streaming – Catch the awards and all the backstage behind-the-scenes action streamed live as a web/mobicast between 17h30 and 23h00 via www.samatv.mobi
M is for… Mafikizolo and Mi Casa – Everyone’s eyes will be on the comeback kids and the dancefloor favourites, with an incredible six SAMA 20 nominations apiece
N is for… Naima Kay and Nakhane Touré – These talented new kids on the block will be slugging it out with Gangs of Ballet, iFani and MuzArt in the Newcomer of the Year category – and are also both nominated for Album of the Year
O is for… Oskido – He’ll be going head to head with Euphonik, Khuli Chana, Mi Casa and Uhuru in the Remix of the Year category
P is for… Parlotones – These veteran multiple SAMA winners, now based in Los Angeles, are not standing back for anyone – they’ve secured four nominations in this year’s awards
Q is for… Queue – Which celebs will you bump into in the queue for the loo at the Superbowl?
R is for… Record of the Year – The Kia Record of the Year category is the most discussed category of the SAMAs every year. At SAMA 20, 20 hit tracks are competing for the honour, with three acts – DJ Kent, Mafikizolo and Jimmy Nevis – each boasting two tracks among the nominees. Y is for… Yes/No/Grey – This album by Gangs of Ballet is in the running for a remarkable five SAMAs this year: Duo or Group of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Best Rock Album, Best Producer and Best Engineer
Z is for… Zahara – She’ll be contesting the Female Artist of the Year category with fellow songbirds Judith Sephuma, Rebecca, Dear Reader and newcomer Naima Kay
