BACK TO THE ACID WITH MOTi
Hello Timo! Thank you so much for taking time out to do this interview with us
1. We ask all our guest this, standard TIE questions what’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear South Africa?
Models in Cape Town or Die Antwoord lol
2. The name Moti is fast becoming a native in the dance scene. How did you get into music and what makes you stand out?
I started dj-ing in 2004 when I started editing tracks and cutting out breaks the guys at the record store said that was disrespectful. So I decided to make my own music!
3. We sure it’s a dream come true, to work with Tiesto, you have a new collab with him “Blow your mind” take us through the track, what inspired the track and did you have any difficult moments while producing it?
Well we wanted to make a big festival track which people would remember after his set at ultra. We first made the drops and then added an out of the box breakdown. Cool thing about the track is that in the first breakdown the tempo slows down to 115 BPM and builds up to 128 BPM and it the second breakdown it slows down to 100 BPM and builds up again to 128 BPM. The slowing down and speeding up gives so much extra energy in our sets!
4. You are signed to musical freedom; Tiesto has taken you under his wing, what is the most important lesson you have learned from Tiesto?
Be creative and try to experiment with music. I guess that’s what musical freedom stands for!
5. Your tracks are supported by many big name DJs how important do you think it is to have the support of these DJs? We sure many young producers would love to know the secret to getting their tracks noticed, what’s your secret?
Not sure, I just make a lot of music. At the beginning 9 out of 10 tracks weren’t good enough after a while you get a feel about what works best in your sets and what other dj’s would like to play. When you find this formula your tracks gets better and better!
6. When producing where do you draw your inspiration from? Do you ever listen back to your tracks and think oh god that’s awful?
Haha, always! I’m not satisfied with most of my own tracks. My inspiration comes from different sources but I think the most important source is touring and my own gigs. When I get back home from a tour or a gig I’m full of ideas! When a first version of a track is finished I put on my iphone, get in my car and just drive around with the track on repeat till I know what to change and what can be better.
7. Who are some producer/musicians you look up to and why?
Tiesto, he’s such a inspiration and teaches me a lot!
8. If you had to use a perfume/scent to describe your sound what perfume/scent would you use and why?
LOL, uhmmm I use Tom Ford it probably suits my music too it’s a little bit dark and mysterious.
9. We believe every artist has a message they are trying to portray to the world through their work. What message are you trying to send out through your music?
Party all day all night!
10. The dance music scene can be a bit negative at times, what do you do outside of the dance music?
Uhm not so much really. I’m on tour or I’m in the studio.. When I’m not in the studio I hang with friends. But mostly studio..
11. Do you remember the first DJ you ever met, who was it and what were your first words to them?
Kenneth G! Can’t remember what I said but he’s my neighbor now and a good friend!
12. As a DJ do you think its best to play for the crowd or to be yourself and play for you/what you want to play? What advice would you give to up and coming DJs.
I think it depends on what you want to accomplish. I like to road-test and play my own music. If it’s something experimental or totally new I mash it up with a popular vocal or something to give it something recognizable. If you want people to know you for your music play what you want to play if you want to play in a lot of local bars just play what they want to hear.
13. You studied fashion design but apparently you sucked at it. We are two fashion crazy ladies and hate following trends. So if we had to ask you to design for us an outfit for one of your gigs what would you design for us?
Haha I really don’t know I’m so bad at it. But probably something comfortable and sexy that you can party in!
14. If you could invent a new instrument, what would it sound like?
It would sound like my voice but better lol
15. What’s one of the funniest things that has happened to you at an event?
Last year in Ibiza a group of people wanted to take a picture with me till they found out I wasn’t Afrojack. This year in Miami a group of people thought I was Martin Garrix but had to disappoint them as well lol.
16. Lastly do you have any messages for your fans?
Thanks for all the support, 2013 was a amazing year and the start of 2014 was even better. Big things are happening as we speak and I hope to see you all very soon at one of my shows or festivals I’m playing!! Thank you so much I love you all!!
Thank you so much for doing this interview with us. We hope to see you playing somewhere around the globe soon.
No thank you!
