10 Tips for a better mixdown by Stefan Viljoen
Ever had one of your tracks mastered by a top class qualified mastering engineer, only to receive the final product and be disappointed?
Chances are the problem lies within the mixing stage of the project and not the mastering.
These 10 tips will help you build & mix your track from the ground up allowing for a clean, loud and dynamic master.
1 – Headroom & correct gain structure is everything!
2 – Start from the low end and work your way up.
3 – If needed separate the sub bass from the rest of the bassline.
4 – Remove the low end from everything else!
5 – Use the available stereo image
6 – Give certain elements their own individual time to shine
7 – Use a reference track
8 – Listen to your mix and reference tracks on multiple systems.
9 – Mastering will not fix your mix!
10 – Practice… Practice… Practice !!!!
