Did I make you fucking dance?
Review seeing Robert DeLong Live!
Just Music is South Africa's leading independent music company and the home of some of the world's leading independent labels. Every month they host Just Music sessions featuring live performances by South Africa’s hippest and hottest talent signed to the Just Music label. Just Music Sessions are hosted at The World of Yamaha Theatre, a pretty kiff venue ( not too big) making for an intimate musical gathering.
On Monday 12 August, Just music Sessions featured their first international artist Robert DeLong. This American rising star signed to Glassnote Records well known for his track Global Concepts was in the country to play at the infamous Oppi Koppie festival the weekend and lucky for us Just Music arranged a little Monday night party for us to witness the epicness. Tapped as '2013 Artist To Watch' by the likes of MTV, Billboard and VIBE, we were lucky enough to attend the event quite last minute (Big Thanks to Just Music) and we were glad we did as Robert’s Performance was nothing short of mind blowing.
In anticipation for the show event attendees could get their faces painted with the signature Robert De Long face art, pretty cool idea! Now if you don’t know, Robert De Long has been dubbed as the one-man dance party or the one man electro band and that he really is. Robert performed tracks from his latest album Just Movement and he kept the crowd moving, singing and for the most part awed through his entire performance. Simply because His performance saw him building up his songs by singing whilst multitasking between a laptop, drum kits and percussion instruments, synthesisers, as well as a Wii remote and flight simulator joystick mapped to midi controllers and gyros which control voice distortions with an energy to match. Pretty sick!
We would say he brings the rock and roll to electronic dance and it was so refreshing to see such an incredibly talented and creative artist do something different other than a typical live DJ set which is what we have become accustomed to. His music is an interesting eclectic mix of rock and roll, electro, drum and base and even dubstep and his lyrics which have a sort of modern indie feel adds an extra dimension to every track.
Robert is a true star who after the performance made time to meet the fans, sign some autographs and take some pics ☺
We have to say that the Just Music Sessions concept is pretty rad as it affords people a chance to attend a live performance in an intimate chilled vibe kinda sophisticated atmosphere. We really recommend attending a session if you can and we look forward to the next one!
Don’t forget to get yourself a copy of Robert De Longs new album and check him out here….
Also give Just Music a follow and like too.
