Spin on Spindoctor
AHEAD OF THE VODACOM DURBAN JULY WE SPOKE TO THE SPINDOCTOR
Hi Kevin, a warm welcome from us here at think IN electronic and thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to do this interview with us.) ☺
What are you up to at present?
Currently settling into my new place in Joburg. Feet up – beats on!
Currently settling into my new place in Joburg. Feet up – beats on!
1. Tell us a little more about who Kevin is and what he does.
Working on many projects in the industry, I run my own events, DJ, produce and have a passion for working on my latest brand; CreamKulture. I am constantly looking for ways to innovate my ideas and becoming an iconic brand with Spindoctor & CreamKulture.
2. The name Spindoctor, how did that come to be?
My dad was watching the cricket one day and said to me how they call Shaun Pollock the Spindoctor because of his bowling skill; I did some research on the name and adapted it very quickly to my brand. A Spindoctor is also someone who markets themself thoroughly and I consider that a huge part of my job.
3. You are fairly young, Did you always see yourself in the music industry as a DJ/ producer?
No I actually didn’t; I saw myself rocking the stage and cameras of Hollywood. But that hasn’t happened. Yet haha. I am still on stage at the end of the day though, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
4. How did you get your big break into the music scene in South Africa?
Hard work and perseverance. I thank Martin Mchale & Dax Tucker from Origin for helping me to believe in my style and crafting my skill. I thank G&G Productions for giving me such great opportunities as well.
5. What are some of the hardships you have face in the music industry?
When my 3G dongle says EDGE. That sucks ;-)
6. You are playing at the Vodacom Durban July what are you most looking forward to?
Looking forward to the G&G Live Marquee. It’s going to be amazing this year! Also looking very forward to July Fever the day before at Durban Country Club!
7. Have you got your outfit sorted as yet?
Nope – I’ll leave the fashion to the ladies! I’m not one to dress according to theme……. ;-)
8. The best thing about the Vodacom Durban July is?
Seeing chicks get their heels stuck in the grass. That’s funny. But the vibe of the July is like no other, I love it!
9. You were blessed enough to played along side some of the most successful international artists such as Avicii, Afrojack,Sebastien Leger, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike,Mark Knight, NERVO, Steve Aoki and more, what has been the best experience for you?
When NERVO kissed me. Didn’t wash my face for 2 days.
10. You released your first track last year; do you think it’s important for a DJ to produce as well? Yes I do think so, it depends what type of entertainer you are though. Producing is a long but fun, I’m learning every day!
11. Do you have any more releases lined up?
Yes, I will be banging out some Cheeky surprises during the July weekend ;-)
12. Lastly, which tree DJs do you look up to?
Tiesto - he is so humble and relaxed. Fresh – nobody carries an aura like he does. As well as Pleasurekraft (They playing on Friday at Truth ) – for their sheer production skill and quirky melodic beats!
Thank you for doing this interview with us and we hope to see you spinning somewhere soon ☺
