Goode time with Roger

Ahead of the Vodacom Durban July we got" Bouncy Bouncy" with the Goode Doctor

roger goode 5fm

1. How are you doing and what are you doing at this moment?

I'm groovy thanks! I'm sitting in my office listening to new music promos I've been sent this week, drinking some java and replying to emails.

2. How did your love for music start, what was the stand out moment that made you decide you want to be a DJ?

My first thought is a time when we snuck into a Psy Trance party near Cape Point with some mates in high school. I was seriously fascinated by the music and the Dj controlling all these crazy sounds. I was properly hooked.

3. You had a weekly residency on 5FM with the Saturday Surgery do you think this paved your path to success as one of South Africa’s, most loved DJs?

The success of that show has always been due to the guest mix Dj's that featured weekly on the line-up, the fact that the music was always upfront, fresh and I also think the fact that I rarely spoke or said much on the show haha! One of those rare radio shows where the music really was always the star or the attraction.

4. How do you go about selecting tracks to play for sets?

Things are very goode for Djs these days. Particularly in South Africa, where music certainly has crossed over. Everyone is listening to everything. This past weekend I had gigs all over the place. We ended off doing a live broadcast from Sedibeng in Soweto, I found myself playing a big mix of tunes, everything from soulful classics, to baleric disco, deep house, place went off! P.S Happy Youth Day!

5. You are playing at the Vodacom Durban July what are you most looking forward to ?

Everything. The outfits, the peeps, the daytime races (maybe put some cash down on some of the horses) and most certainly the after party.

6. Have you got your outfit sorted as yet?

Timberlake! Suit and Tie!

7. The best thing about the Vodacom Durban July is?

Getting out of Joberg on a freezing cold weekend and seeing my friends in toasty Funky Durban!

8. In todays time we are blessed with an abundance of EDM festivals Cream fields, Ultra Music festival, Global Gathering, Tomorrowland and South West four to name a few. What would be your dream festival to play at or to headline and why?

I'd love to have a residency in Ibiza. Something weekly that you could build from the ground up. Help promote, market. Attract a certain type of crowd. Get stuck in and make it my very own.

9. Which musicians / DJs / Producers do you look up to ?

I really love what Nile Rogers has done on the new Daft Punk Release. It’s very chic. I follow a lot of Drum n Bass producers at the moment. Bands I follow, all sorts, from The Hurts, Fiest, Jay Z to Pendulum. Worldwide DJs I've always been very fond of John Digweed, Pete Tong, Richie Hawton etc. I like perps who are doing something new and original. These days music can sound very manufactured and recycled.

10. As a DJ do you think it important to produce as well?

Absolutely. Anyone can be a DJ, especially with all the cool cheap toys available these days. Globally you are not measured by your DJ abilities alone. Having your own productions under your belt is what gives you credibility.

11. What drink describes you and why?

Coffee! Bouncy Bouncy! ... oooh such a goode time!!

12. Lastly, what is the best thing about being a 5FM DJ?

When I first started working at 5, the station manager at the time who now lives abroad said to me, if there's one thing I can guarantee you with this new job, it's that you are gonna meet a lot of girls! haha! Just kidding.,it’s lots of fun!

Thank you for doing this interview with us and we hope to see you very soon :)
