Spotlight Interview With Protoculture
INTERVIEW
PROTOCULTURE
Hi Nate, it is a huge a pleasure to be interviewing you. Lets kick of this interview
1. Can you take us through your musical journey? How did you fall into EDM and how has this journey been so far?
I’ve been doing this for over ten years now. Initially I started out producing and dj’ing psy-trance and traveled the world for about 7 years doing that. I’ve always been a fan of trance and progressive though from the beginning, especially melodic stuff, so when I moved over to producing what I currently do I really felt like things had come full circle for me.
2. We all know that with DJing comes tons of travelling (DJs do live the life hey) what has been the craziest gig you have ever played and why? What has been the best gig you have ever played and why?
I’ve done so many over the years, but a few that come to mind... I did a party on a cruise ship called “tribe on board’ in Brazil which was nuts. Two thousand people on a boat for 3 days. I think ASOT 500 is one of my favourites I’ve played so far... the energy at that party was insane.
3. In your opinion how has the EDM scene in South Africa changed from when you started out compared to today?
The EDM scene is constantly evolving and I’ve seen it go through so many changes over the years. At the moment though things are looking good in SA. We’re seeing a lot of great local artists coming up and a lot of good shows being put on down here at the moment. I’d love to see the local media (Radio/Television) get behind our native artists though a little more.
4. There are a lot of musical changes happening at the moment and many DJs are changing their styles. Do you see your style changing in the future? If so what are you inclined to move towards?
Well, I’ve just made a big change, coming from the psy-trance scene. I guess when you do this as long as I have you need to change something at some point to avoid becoming stale. I’ve got a lot of respect for other dj’s who do that because its not easy. My only gripe is that you need to change for honest reasons though and not just because fashion and money dictates it. You should always remain honest musically to yourself in my opinion
5. The Godskitchen Fusion concept is awesome. We were lucky enough to experience it last year at H2O in South Africa. Coupled with this what can we expect from your set at the Godskitchen Fusion event in South Africa?
We’ll have to wait and see... I’m constantly working on new tracks and edits and so forth so it depends what I’ve got done by the time of the gig. I don’t like to plan too long in advance when it comes to djing... its important to have that spontaneity when you play live. I’ll obvioulsy be dropping some of my latest singles and releases though.
6. It is no secret that the 26 and 27 of October (event dates) is Halloween weekend, soooo are we going to see some crazy outfits behind the decks ☺?
I’m not much of a ‘dress up’ kinda guy, ha ha.
7. South Africa is your home, what is your favorite place to visit in South Africa and which places would you recommend as must see sights when in South Africa?
I love Cape Town. Its where I’ve lived all my life and its such a beautiful city. Plenty to do down here, like pop down to the beach, go to some of the many fantastic restaurants around town or check out the amazing view from Table Mountain.
8. What are working on at the moment any new tracks?
I’ve started working on a new album so remixing and new singles are kinda on hold for now. I’m aiming to get the album done some time in the first half of next year.
9. With the year drawing to a close what has been your track/tracks of 2012 thus far?
One of my favorites and a seriously underrated tune for me has to be Talla 2XLC vs Robert Burian - Drums of Ganesha on Perfecto Records. Such a beautiful piece of music.
We look forward to catching up with you in the future see you at the event ;)
